20 years ago, he worked at a national research institution, studying brake pads for novel vehicles. 20 years later, no matter it was by coincidence or fate, after transferring and experiencing multi-departments and multi-occupation, he eventually got promoted as a recognized leader of China friction industry at home and broad. He is Wang Yao, President of China Friction & Sealing Material Association.
China Friction & Sealing Material Association was the former China Asbestos Products Association. After his inauguration, he took over the mission from predecessors to continue the surveys and anti-counterfeiting, and also carried out brands-recommendation campaigns to guide customers to learn how to choose good quality products.
He built up industrial forum websites;
He convened and hosted the 1th technology exchange meeting of friction & sealing materials;
He organized to editor and translate industries books like Patents Abstracts Compilation For Friction & Sealing Materials At Home And Broad, Practical of Friction Material Production Technology, Automotive Friction Materials Testing Technology,etc.
He carried out technical consulting service, hosted four technical courses, and invited experts from America, Canada, Japan, Holland, Taiwan and India to communicate and learn from each others.
He also organized a group of entrepreneurs of this industry to take part in exhibitions, to study from overseas and to explore the oversea market.
Especially, the technology exchange meetings are warmly welcomed all over the world, year and year better. In 2005, only 26 countries and areas' experts and representatives, more than 1300 people joined this meeting. Right now, more than 604 companies has become members of the Friction & Sealing Material Association, taking up over 85% companies of this industry in China. Meetings and activities for friction materials and sealing materials have to be held separately, because of its expanding on scale.
Nowadays, China Friction & Sealing Material Association has become a famous organization, widely recognized by experts and entrepreneurs within this industry. It was also highly commended by China Economic and Trade Commission and the China Building Materials Industry Association. President Wang believes that "95% of the market share for brake pads is at abroad. Brake pads manufacturers in developed countries surpass ours' not just in technology, but also in equipment. If our manufacturers do not learn from them, we will have no chance to catch up with them."
Correspondent: With the rapid development of automobile industry, the development of brake pads industry is also get promoted. But 80% of China’s enterprises with its small scale, can not compete with companies overseas. How do you explain this phenomenon?
President Wang: The number of brake pads manufacturers in China is more than the total amount from other countries and areas, which will result in re-construction and price-competition. This is not good for the development of this industry. But this situation will be improved sooner. It is just like a 100-meter running race, farsighted entrepreneurs will realize this situation earlier.
Recently, we just finished the latest council meeting, and one of the important topics was how to set up the industry admittance rule. It is advocated by the attendees unanimously. We also submitted to China National Development and Reform Department the latest industrial situation report, and required to have a discussion on conditions of setting up and publishing the industry admittance rules. The core of this rule is to upgrade the whole standards of this industry, not only for the new players, but also for the factories already in this industry, if they are not qualified, they shall be out.
Correspondent: The setup of standards for friction materials is a very important part of China Friction & Sealing Material Association’s commission. Would you like to have an explain on the standards?
President Wang: I think it is very clever for association to regulate and conduct the development of its industry by standards. Though objections and disagreements will never be uniformed, setup of the standards system is still the main mission for us, more than 10 new standards have already been promulgated and executed, others are under amending. We will spare no efforts to finish this mission.
However, due to the different of development for each factory, some of the standards can not satisfy them all, we need to set up different standards, such as national standards, industrial standards, association standards, and corporate standards to meet different companies’ conditions, which also contributes to a very clear market position classification. Thus we can rapidly improve concentration of our industry.
Correspondent: Great changes have taken place, since led by Friction & Sealing Material Association. More than 100 foreign representatives joined the latest technology exchange meeting. Considering the international trend of this traditional industry, what is your next plan on connecting with the foreign market?
President Wang: Marketization is necessary for us to do this job, which is a specific point of view for the No.36 Paper. For the rapid increasing development of global economic integration, marketization must focus on internationalization. A most important fact is that 95% of the market share for brake pads is at abroad. Brake pads manufacturers in developed countries surpass ours’ not just in technology, but also in equipment. If our manufacturers do not learn from them, we will have no chance to catch up with them.
Besides, we convened nine international technology exchange meetings continuously, invited experts all over the world to deliver speeches, which really have a great influence on our industry. More and more industry insiders will join us, that is the answer.
At the same time, we organized several times to take part in international exhibitions, visit advanced manufacturers, to learn their advanced technology and experience. We also successfully help Xinyi Group and Shandong Double Link brake material company to be American Automobile OE suppliers.
Until now, export scale is expanding, total export amount is taking up about 25% of the whole industry output, which is still increasing.
